PRESS RELEASE
Brussels, 8 May 2025
Michael Niederbacher, CEO of TerraX and BiHcon, has been re-elected for a third time as Vice President of the European Biogas Association (EBA), strengthening his leadership in the European biogas sector. Niederbacher will support Piero Gattoni, recently appointed President of the Association and the first Italian to hold this position.
With over twenty years of experience in renewable energy, several patents to his name, and a vision focused on sustainable innovation, Michael Niederbacher will continue to contribute to reinforcing the strategic role of biogas in the European energy landscape.
“As Vice President of the European Biogas Association (EBA), and President of the Company Advisory Board (CAB) and the Company Advisory Council (CAC),
I would like to thank everyone once again for their trust. I am extremely proud of the development and progress plan involving the EBA team, which now includes 25 collaborators.
It is a great source of pride to see the appreciation from member companies: in just six years, the number of member companies has increased from 52 to 297, thanks to shared know-how and a common strategic vision.Allow me to highlight a significant personal achievement from my previous term: in 2024, I contributed to defining one of the most important strategies for Europe’s energy future. The biomethane production potential by 2030 exceeds the 35 billion cubic meters projected in the REPowerEU plan. Looking ahead to 2040, production could meet up to 85% of the demand for gaseous fuels.
Our goal is to make this target achievable, and being part of this transformation is, for me, a source of great satisfaction.
I would like to emphasize the key factor behind the success of our initiatives: unlike many entities and consortia that focus on supporting already active companies, the EBA stands out for its proactive approach aimed at creating the future of biogas in Europe, with an increasingly large-scale development vision.
With the new three-year plan, we intend to continue this path with renewed energy, promoting innovation, supporting enterprises, aligning on strategic goals, and fostering new awareness. We are looking toward the future of the sector.”
In 2023, combined production of biogas and biomethane in Europe reached 22 billion cubic meters (bcm), equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of Belgium, Denmark, and Ireland combined. This result marks a significant milestone and the largest growth ever recorded in biomethane production.
Currently, 25 European countries are actively involved in developing the sector, with a total of 1,510 operational biomethane plants across Europe, 1,324 of which are located within the European Union. More than 85% of these plants are already connected to the gas network, mainly to the distribution grid, enabling direct injection of biomethane into the existing energy system.
Thanks to these developments, in 2023 biomethane accounted for approximately 7% of the EU’s total natural gas consumption, confirming itself as one of the most concrete and immediately available solutions to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support the decarbonization of the energy sector.
The biogas sector currently employs over 200,000 people in Europe and contributes more than €6 billion to the continent’s economy, establishing itself as a key resource for both environmental and economic sustainability.
Under the leadership of Gattoni and Niederbacher, the EBA will further strengthen its commitment to promoting innovative policies and advanced technological solutions.
